Improving mental health through team building
Teams that work well together, collaborate, and support each other, are the cornerstone of any successful business. Improving teamwork and improving workplace mental health go hand in hand, especially when you consider the amount of time we spend at work with our colleagues.
Mental health in the workplace has never been more prevalent, with more people working from home than ever before. Lockdowns have forced a sense of isolation and detachment on many people, and as we start to return to the office, there is an increased awareness of how mental health affects workplace performance.
There is an endless selection of both face to face and virtual team building activities available in Australia, with the emphasis on developing relationships, collaborating and gaining a better understanding for our colleague’s work style. In conjunction with mental health experts, we have designed a series of Team Building workshops, that focus on collaboration, fun and engagement, and provide the perfect platform to discuss mental health in the workplace.
Supporting and strengthening a team of people that work well together is a significant advantage for any business, because happy employees help promote good mental health in the workplace. Mental health at work continues to be a very important issue that should be a priority for every company, as employers have a duty of care regarding the wellbeing of their staff.
Proactive mental health policy improves workplace culture.

How does mental health effect work performance
Most people know what absenteeism is, not going to work. But it can be so much more than that. Especially when your mental health has had a direct impact on your physical health, and you get sick or your negative thoughts are consuming you, that you can’t go to work.
Presenteeism is when you have gone to work but you are not being functional. This has an impact on everyone. Consider some of the myths we are taught around grief and loss, like the gold old phrase ‘just get back to work so you can think about something else’. Imagine how productive that person is going to be. Unfortunately, they are still consumed by the same negative thoughts.

Empower your management team to lead by example and lean to identify Mental Health problems within your organisation. How to initially approach team members who are struggling is as important as getting professional help and supporting them through the Mental Health journey.
Why mental health in the workplace is important?
If we can support a person to wellness you create a loyal employee. All workplaces put pressure on employees, creating positive and negative stress. Some people can cope with undue negative stress however many can’t cope, and if there is a healthy platform to talk about mental health, this creates a more empathetic and cohesive team.
Other costs are:
- Recruitment and training
- lost productivity and lost knowledge
- Disruption to the work environment
Effects of mental health in the workplace
Stress, anxiety and depression can be like a contagious virus in a workplace. Have you ever been working on a team project and there is a deadline – everyone is working effectively and communicating well? Add an individual that is experiencing high levels of negative stress and think about what this can do to team morale. More often than not, the teams productively and effectiveness are compromised. In severe cases where team members are suffering with depression, it can have long term detrimental effects to the teams environment.
How do you deal with mental health in the workplace?
Normalise and educate about mental health.
With a zero tolerance of bullying and poor behaviour.
Training, posters (visual demonstrate) and actions.
Treat mental health at work like physical health.
Consider your company policies around sick leave. Be proactive with workplace wellness programs, and not focus your company policies around sickness, shifting the focus to wellness both physical and mental health.
What do you do if someone has an injury, gets sick or goes to hospital? Physical health is no different to mental health. We have a Physical First Aid officer and fire warden. Is it time to consider a mental health officer? Because of the stigma around mental health, its important to be aware of the confidentially and trust involved in addressing mental health challenges at work.
How to implement mental health awareness in the workplace
Within any organisation there will be silent champions of mental health and wellness. It is important to give them a voice, a role and more recognised responsibility. Make sure you have people trained across the organisation so that there will be someone for everyone to be able to discuss their concerns of mental health without fear or concern that it is about performance management.
How to promote mental health and wellbeing in the workplace
Build a group of mental health and wellness champions demonstrate to employees that your business is serious about mental health. Toolbox talks are used to address best safety practices in order to create a physically safe working environment Tool. Mental health is no different -incident reports provide a base for continual mental health policy improvement, and there should be easily accessible resources and company mental health policies placed around the workplace. Employees need to know that there is support available should they need a referral to counselling and psychology services.
Creating a healthy workplace
Check in with staff regularly. Mental Health is different for everyone but we know that a positive environment is important. Flexibility is key. Fresh air, temperature, plants, fresh fruit, animals (fish or birds low maintenance) social interactions. Zero tolerance of poor behaviour. We all want to feel as if we belong. This is achieved when people are heard, seen and valued. Achieve this and you will go a long way to having a healthy workplace and loyal staff.
Tips for Maintaining Mental Wellbeing at Work
Have an attitude of continual improvement. Demonstrate your commitment to physical, mental and emotional wellness. Find ways to check in with staff and recognise milestones in their life, like birthdays, pregnancies, death of loved ones, moving house, or becoming grandparents. Make it real and show the organisation cares. This goes a long way in creating a positive company culture.
